Coil Basket Making

  • Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre 52-54 Derwent Drive Long Gully Vic 3550 Australia (map)

Coil baskets have been made by indigenous communities around the world for thousands of years.  There is evidence to suggest that Aboriginal people in Victoria, including locally, made baskets using natural materials.  I have learnt the basic technique from a Dja Dja Wurrung Elder and master weaver, Marilyne Nicholls.  This class will start by using raffia, because it is simple to use and does not require any preparation.  Participants will learn how to use the raffia to make a basic mat or basket.  Once you have learned the technique (there is really only one stitch to learn!) it just takes practice.  Then you can go off in all sorts of different directions – different materials, shapes, designs and dyeing.
