Children’s Week - Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

We were thrilled to celebrate Children’s Week on 23rd October, 2023 and partnered with Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Service, Bendigo Community Health Service and Shine Bright.  Sarah Bremner, our Community Playgroup Facilitator coordinated turning our meeting room into a magical space for families to enjoy.  A number of our volunteers spent the last few weeks photocopying, cutting, laminating and making decorations and props.

Children’s Week celebrates the talents, skills and achievements of children, and their right to connect with others and respectfully share their views. This year’s theme is ‘Children have the right to relax, play and take part in activities they enjoy’. Our event is one of over 200 free Children’s Week events supported by the Victorian Department of Education

25 families enjoyed playing together – there was rainbow coloured playdough (the children made pretend cupcakes), colouring-in sheets and puzzles, face painting, pin the grin on the Cheshire Cat, story time and song time. Many thanks to Lar Ka Paw for leading singing with her guitar and LGNC Coordinator, Kerry, read “The Tiger who came to tea” by Judith Kerr.

Some of our volunteers cut up fruit platters and made mini pancakes and we also had some delicious catering from Two Twisted Tarts.  We are very grateful to Christine (who is on student placement with us) for capturing the day with her brilliant photography.

Many thanks to Christine Treacy Photography

for capturing these great photos (below) of our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. You can see more of her amazing work at: https://www.facebook.com/christinetreacyphotography/

Rock Painting

Robyn is going to run three sessions of rock painting during Term 3.  Robyn chooses her rocks, in suitable sizes, shapes and colours, at a garden supplies place which kindly provides them free!  She then uses a range of different paints to decorate them.  This activity can be relaxing, meditative and creative.  Designs can be whatever you want.  There are thousands of ideas online. The painted rocks are then coated with a sealant, and are ready to display, give away as gifts, or hide in places where random people will find them e.g. gardens and playgrounds.  It is a great pleasure to watch a child find one in a playground!  It’s also a good feeling to do a random act of kindness – something that will brighten someone else’s day.

Coil Basket Making

Coil baskets have been made by indigenous communities around the world for thousands of years.  There is evidence to suggest that Aboriginal people in Victoria, including locally, made baskets using natural materials.  I have learnt the basic technique from a Dja Dja Wurrung Elder and master weaver, Marilyne Nicholls.  This class will start by using raffia, because it is simple to use and does not require any preparation.  Participants will learn how to use the raffia to make a basic mat or basket.  Once you have learned the technique (there is really only one stitch to learn!) it just takes practice.  Then you can go off in all sorts of different directions – different materials, shapes, designs and dyeing.
